Rain Capture System

Each bucket has its own mechanical float valve. Water enters all five simultaneously; when one reaches the selected level, its valve closes while the others continue filling. When all five close, excess water exits through the overflow.
This is more dependable than connecting the buckets at their bottoms. Bottom connections make bucket removal difficult and create 25 gallons of leakage if a fitting fails.
Physical arrangement
Build a level platform approximately 6 feet long and 20 inches deep:
- Five opaque, food-grade 5-gallon buckets in one row
- Watertight lids on every bucket
- A horizontal 1-inch PVC manifold mounted 18–30 inches above the bucket inlets
- Five identical ½-inch branches spaced over the buckets
- One low-pressure float valve mounted through the upper sidewall of each bucket
- A shutoff valve and quick-disconnect between each manifold branch and bucket
Each full bucket weighs approximately 42 pounds. Design the platform for at least 300 pounds, including a safety margin. Keep the buckets at ground or waist level—there is no benefit to elevating all that weight unless you intend to gravity-feed water elsewhere.
Use a 1-inch manifold even though the individual lines are only ½ inch. The larger header reduces the tendency for the first bucket to receive most of the flow.

- Five new food-grade, opaque 5-gallon buckets
- Five gasketed or screw-on bucket lids
- Five low-pressure ½-inch livestock/rain-barrel float valves
- Five ½-inch full-port ball valves
- Five short potable-water-safe hoses
- Five garden-hose or cam-lock quick-disconnect sets
- Approximately 7 feet of 1-inch Schedule 40 PVC
- One 1-inch PVC inlet tee or wye
- Five 1-inch-by-½-inch reducing tees
- One cleanout cap at the manifold’s low end
- One screened overflow fitting
- Downspout debris filter or rain head
- First-flush diverter
- 1/16-inch stainless insect screen
- Treated lumber or metal shelving rated for at least 300 pounds
- Pipe clamps and exterior-grade fasteners
- Optional removable 200-micron sediment filter
I would use flexible hose only for the final connection to each bucket. Make the main manifold rigid PVC so it remains level and supported.
First-flush sizing
For your wooded Port Angeles property, pollen, needles, moss and bird contamination are more important than urban dust. I would divert approximately two gallons for every 100 square feet of roof feeding this system.
For a 200-square-foot roof section:
- First flush: approximately 4 gallons
- Bucket capacity: 25 gallons nominal
- Total required before overflow: approximately 29 gallons
A 4-inch PVC first-flush pipe holds roughly one gallon per 18 inches of length, so four gallons requires approximately six feet of pipe. A purpose-made first-flush chamber may be neater.
The CDC recommends first-flush diversion because the initial runoff carries the highest concentration of roof contaminants. It also recommends keeping collected water separate from drinking-water plumbing.
How much roof is needed?
The standard calculation is:

Allowing about 85% collection efficiency, a 200-square-foot roof section produces approximately:

Thus, approximately ¼ inch of rain on 200 square feet can nearly fill all five buckets, although the first-flush chamber increases the rainfall required slightly. The 0.623 conversion factor is supported by university extension guidance.
Important construction details
- Set the float valves to stop at roughly 4½ gallons, leaving expansion and handling space. Five completely brimmed buckets are difficult to move without spilling.
- Put every bucket on the same level surface.
- Drill the float-valve hole through the upper sidewall, not the lid. Lids flex and may prevent accurate shutoff.
- Use gaskets on both sides of every bucket penetration.
- Fit an individual shutoff and quick-disconnect so any bucket can be removed without stopping the other four.
- Make the overflow at least as large as the incoming pipe and direct it well away from your house, platform and slope.
- Screen the inlet, vent and overflow with mesh no larger than 1/16 inch to exclude mosquitoes.
- Shade the buckets and use opaque containers to inhibit algae.
- Install a manifold cleanout at the end opposite the inlet.
- Drain and disconnect the system before hard freezes.
Intended water use
I would label every bucket:
RAINWATER — NON-POTABLE — TREAT BEFORE DRINKING
In Washington, rooftop rainwater may be collected without a water-right permit when used on-site, but potable and indoor uses face additional health and plumbing requirements.
For emergency drinking, roof water should not be considered safe merely because it looks clear. It requires an appropriate treatment train—sediment removal, pathogen-rated filtration and disinfection—with special concern for roof material, chimney deposits, animal waste and chemical contamination.
My bottom-line recommendation is a 200-square-foot roof feed, 4-gallon first flush, 1-inch manifold and five independently valved, lidded buckets with low-pressure float valves. That gives you simultaneous automatic filling, removable buckets and safe overflow without relying on someone to watch the rain.
